Definitely my Team-Of-The-Year, Softballers!!!
here's something which i cannot don't blog about and i guess the title said it all... The softball team this year is my team of the year... we are legends in our own rights. If things are correct as it stands, my year 1 team was the first team in Eusoff history to make it to the finals of softball, even then we lost due to bad pitching but it was a dream team, cos we have national players in yueping and lionel and the female national team captain ruoyan and super experienced players like lahiru, yingen, andrea, darren and cricketeers like dinidu...
but this year, this team is fresh.. totally newbies and the only people who played before are until jc level - shawn, christina, fabian and mandy and not forgetting a gift from heaven - Zane, a canadian exchange student who plays softball back home... and dinidu and me inclusive if u consider us softballers cos we merely picked up the sport in year 1. the rest are all newbies who enjoy playing the sport. we are the most inexperienced team in the whole IHG cos even KE7 has IVP players. grouped with KR and RH, who have traditionally strong softball teams, we were not even expected to make it past the group stage... the label of underdogs suit us well, we went in with no pressure and me and shawn's only hope is to sneak a win and make it to the semis so that we wun lose too much points that will be counted to the final standings of IHG.
Game on yesterday, first game against KR, we managed to shut them out in the first 2 innings with superb fielding which surprises even me, but KR fielded a slightly weaker team i guess, considering that they had already won RH earlier... but we were unable to capitalize on our good fielding. score 0-0. 3rd inning, momentarily laspes caused us 4 runs... and its stayed that way till 5th inning bottom where it was our turn to bat and last chance to win. I think they were a little complacent and we were a little lucky... their pitcher cracked and we managed to walk home 5 runs, the last was my walk which sent 2 people home and we won 5-4 unexpectedly when just before batting, everyone thought we had lost... jubilation seriously, a stroke of luck which turned things our way when we were playing well...
game suspended cos of rain and we had to play RH today in the morning... we were confident of beating them since we overcame the odds to beat KR... it was a morale boosting win and definitely it upped everyone's confidence. effortlessly, we beat RH 15-6 i think... and topping the group gave us a chance to avoid temasek who beat Sheares on the other side to top the group in sudden death... no difference actually since both of them are equally strong, but i was hoping that KR might be able to beat TH for us since they were techinically better than us. Semis was our secret objective and it was met.
the first semis was exciting KR was playing well and leading 5-1 going into the last inning... expectedly, they cracked again and edwin the culprit once again... temasek came back to life and won 6-5 at the end.. KR did a KR once again... Our game, we were not expecting anything as seriously they are 1 level above us and all we can do is minimize the damage. but unexpectedly we maz out our first inning with a 7-1 lead, that gave us the belief that we might actually be able to win it... sheares was slowly inching back into the game although we played well but they had really good batters and our batting wasnt that good. at the last inning, it read 7-4.
lots of uncharacteristic and dubious calls from the umpire incurred our wrath but we were hapless against it with very bad calls like balls were counted as strikes and sheares' stealing of bases and rough play... we had to let it go... 7-5: i got a feeling that we will win in the end but i din dare to tell anyone, cos i dun want anyone to get complacent or affect weihan's pitching... they chopped the ball at 7-5 and the umpire failed to call for it... me and ah nua were damn pissed... that was obvious biasness towards them... then they got a run in to bring the score to 7-6. at that point of time, everything looked as bad as it can be with their bases loaded and the next batter was their captain and one of their better batter... 2 strikes on him put the pressure on him and all he had to do was to bat a safe game and they will be home and dry... but at the last pitch, he batted a fly ball which headed outside, but ah nua went to catch it to confirm the play... in the end, we won... maybe we were lucky, i have to say but i think karma caught up on them... nonetheless, it was a fantastic feeling for someone who were not even expected to make it past the group stage to overcome all odds and end up in the finals... better still, beating 2 of the favourites along the way...
bond between the players are starting to show, we are legends in our own ways... everyone feels for everyone... its truly a team game for this year's softball team... you are the team of my heart for this year's IHG... no matter what happens, not even if soccer wins gold can come close to it... But for now, let's give temasek a fight and i am not going to give it up without a fight too... underdogs we may be, but it doesnt matter... if they want it, they have to fight for it too... we didn't fight all the way to gift the gold to you...
for now... i wanna thank my dear softballers... for extending my retirement... =)
