Was lucky enough to finally get to go Athens... initially planned to squeeze the tours and tried to go to Santorini and Mykronos...was hoping that i can manage it but it proved not feasible...
to start it off, the first venture out to the famed Acropolis started on the wrong foot when we went in the afternoon, after lunch. We were busy snapping pictures of the magnificent structure.. the Parthenon... marvelling at how rich the Greek Gods are when they are able to pave all the pavements with marbles.. Finally the trek up brought us nothing but disappointment when the Acropolis is closed.. at freaking 230pm.. all thanks to that, we didnt get to see the Parthenon.. and we are flying off early next morning to Santorini..
we managed to book flt and transport and lodging at the hotel we are staying at.. albeit its a little costly but it was not to be missed...
thankfully we took a flt anyway, cos we reached early and the weather is good and the place is beautiful... we cant stop snapping photos even right at our balcony... that took us a while before we manage to drag ourselves out to rent a car and look for food before we start exploring the island. our lodging is at this little town called Firostefani.. we drove down to Fira, the main town for some food before deciding to go to this black pebble beach called Kamari and a nearby town called Pyros where there seemed to be the highest concentration of Churches.. Churches seemed to be everywhere on Santorini and they are easily recognisable by their blue dome...
nearer evening, we rushed over to this place which has supposedly the best sunset view on the whole island... called OiA... for a while, it seemed like the whole island is congregating at that spot because its simply packed with people... but i must say that the view is really breathtaking, we went crazy taking photos and came up with quite a few nonsense photos of ourselves. pity the sky is too cloudy, we din get too nice a sunset... but the people disappeared as soon as the sun set. we trooped ard looking for food at some restaurant to rest for the night, planning to wake up early the next day to catch the sunrise..
the weather next day turned bad actually, it was all gloomy, foggy and rainy... we din manage to get out of the hotel till close to noon time... we rushed to cover as many places as possible... first stop was to visit the only port on the whole island... as the island is very mountainous, the port is situated at one of the lowest point on the whole island... there were doubts whether our little Piccanto can climb up after going all the way down... but it did nonetheless. luckily...
next we visited the black volcanic sand beach and the supposedly red beach... before rushing over to the lighthouse... we run into a group of fellow travellers 2 times.. before making friends with them only to find out that they are malaysians on a holiday... so coincidental...
the sky turned really overcast when we are rushing back... we lost our way and got trapped in the fog on top of the cliff... cant see more than 1-2 metres in front of us... and almost drove over the cliff twice... lucky we got out of it alive and made it back to the hotel. by then the rain was super heavy and the reception was nowhere to be found, leaving us really worried about missing the flight.. one of the fellow stayers was really nice and offered to drive us to the airport to catch our flt... we were more concerned if we can make it back to athens on time cos we are leaving the next day. the weather is not helping but luckily we covered the most impt places on the first day.
the ATR propeller plane greeted us at the airport, did nothing to lift our spirits as it was old and rickety and most certainly not comforting but its quite an experience sitting thru it afterall...
